About the Speakers:

Dr. Ulrick Vieux, DO, MS

Board Certified in Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry. Dr. Vieux is the founding Psychiatry Residency Program Director at Garnet Health Medical Center. He currently serves as the Chairman and Medical Director of Behavioral Health at Garnet Health Medical Center. Dr. Vieux completed a residency in Family Medicine at New York Medical College (Brooklyn-Queens campus) prior to completing a psychiatry residency and child and adolescent fellowship at St. Luke’s/Roosevelt Medical Center. Dr. Vieux also completed fellowships at the AOA -Health Policy fellowship and NYU Psychoanalytic fellowship. He has held academic appointments at Harvard Medical School, Columbia University College of Physician and Surgeons, Mt. Sinai-School of Medicine, TouroCOM and Meharry College of Medicine.

Dr. Kim Arrington, PsyD

Dr. Kim Arrington is a Psychologist and Psychoanalyst specializing in children and adolescents. Dr. Arrington is currently the Head of the Psychology Department for Garnet Hospital in Orange County, New York. She is also a Lecturer at TouroCOM. She had been the Clinical and Training Director for the Harlem Family Institute, a psychoanalytic psychotherapy program, for 10 years. She continues to serve a as member of the Harlem Family Institute Board of Directors and Training Committee. Dr. Arrington is also Faculty and a Supervisor for Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. She has consulted on film and television projects relevant to mental health among African Americans.

Dr. Rahn Kennedy Bailey, MD, DFAPA, ACP

Dr. Rahn Bailey is Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Assistant Dean of Community Engagement at LSU Health Sciences Center-New Orleans. He served as Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry of Meharry Medical College from March 2008-Dec 2014, Wake Forest Med School from Jan 2015 to July 2018, and the National Medical Association from Aug 2002 to Aug 2006.

Dr. Bailey graduated from Morehouse College with honors in 1986, medical school at UTMB in Galveston, TX in 1990 with research in Hematology, and postgraduate work in Houston as the Chief Resident in 1994. Subsequently, he completed a fellowship in Forensic Medicine at Yale University in 1995. He has practiced clinical, research, academic, and forensic psychiatry now for over 23 years.

Academically, he currently has 87 peer reviewed (accepted/under review) publications in over 50 referenced journals. He has published two books; the first on Health Disparities in Aug 2013, then his most recent on Gun Violence in Aug 2018. In addition, he has four book chapters, has given 93 University Grand Rounds, over 100 joint hospital lecture series on topics including Treatment of MDD in African American Men, Risk Management Approaches to Contemporary Psychopharmacology, and Sexual Offender Forensic Assessments.

Forensic work has been his subspecialty interest now for 20 years. He trained in adolescent/adult forensic work. He has conducted over 1,000 evaluations, been deposed or testified on over 100 occasions in seven states. Moreover, he has key publications in this field of study. One of note was his Dec 2002 article in the AAPL Journal on Sexual Offender Laws in TX.

In summary, Dr. Bailey has been very active throughout his career as an academic psychiatrist. His work has been seminal in assisting communities in caring for their own health, developing strategies to improve their respective health paradigms, and working to enhance the lives of young professionals.

Dr. Sidney Hankerson, MD, MBA

Dr. Hankerson is Co-Director of the Columbia Wellness Center, Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Adult Psychiatrist at the New York-Presbyterian Charles B. Rangel Community Health Center. He was also appointed Co-Chair of Columbia’s Anti-Racism Taskforce. His research focuses on reducing racial/ethnic disparities in mental health treatment. He has been awarded grant funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Brain and Behavior Foundation (formerly NARDAD), the New York State Office of Mental Health, Columbia University, and private foundations. He is a nationally recognized expert at faith-based mental health services research. 

He has presented his study results at the White House, United Nations, NIMH, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Gracie Mansion (NYC Mayor’s Office), and numerous national academic conferences. He was an inaugural member of the American Psychiatric Association’s (APA) Council of Faith and Community Partnerships and served on the APA Council of Minority Mental Health and Health Disparities. NYC Mayor DeBlasio appointed Dr. Hankerson as Chair of the Community Services Board of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in 2021.

Dr. Hankerson completed a dual MD/MBA program from Emory University, where he was Medical School Class President for two years. He completed his psychiatry residency at Emory and was named Chief Resident of Psychiatry at Grady Memorial Hospital. He then completed a NIMH T32 post-doctoral research fellowship at Columbia University/New York State Psychiatric Institute.

Dr. Jeff Gardere, PsyD

Dr. Jeff Gardere is a board certified clinical psychologist and an ordained interfaith minister. In addition to having a private practice in Manhattan, he is an Associate Professor and Course Director of Behavioral Medicine at TouroCOM in New York City.

Dr. Jeff Gardere, better known as “America’s Psychologist,” is also a prolific author of four books and a contributing author of a half-dozen books including the brand-new text, "The Causes of Autism.” In addition to being a respected academician, Dr. Jeff has been a contributor to the FOX Network, the Today Show, MSNBC, and CNN. Dr. Jeff was the host of VH1's Dad Camp, and was recently the substitute news anchor on the nightly newscast, Chasing News, on the FOX affiliates.

Dr. Jeff has also co-produced the following documentary films:

  • You Are Not Alone; Black Gay Men and Depression
  • Erasing Family; Parental Alienation and the Effects on Children
  • When Harlem Saved a King; The Assassination Attempt on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in 1958.

Dr. Gardere is a devoted family man, raising his six children who range in age from 4 to 27 years old. Dr. Gardere’s favorite activities include attending religious services, exercising daily and volunteering to help those in need.
